For 2026, I’m anchoring into two words that feel both simple and profound:
Presence.
Heart.
Recently, I learned something I love: one of the Japanese symbols most directly associated with mindfulness is 念 (Nen). It can be understood as a combination of two parts:
今 (Ima) — now, this moment
心 (Shin / Kokoro) — heart, mind, spirit
Together, they point to a “now mind,” guided by heart.
Not perfection.
Not constant calm.
Just a gentle, honest returning—again and again—to here, and to what matters.
And honestly? That’s what I want 2026 to be about. Not forcing a new version of myself. Not chasing goals from pressure. But coming back to the basics—because the basics are where life gets real again.
Presence + Heart: A Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness is often misunderstood as something we need to get right—a state of calm we’re supposed to reach or maintain.
But presence isn’t something you accomplish. It’s something you practice returning to.
And heart is what makes that return meaningful. Heart is what turns attention into connection.
Where the Magic Lives
I used to think mindfulness had to be big and formal—long meditations, perfect routines, the “right” way to do it.
But more and more, I’m noticing this:
The magic is usually small.
It’s in the space between your inhale and exhale. In the silence between notes. In the softening of your shoulders when you remember you’re allowed to breathe. In the way light hits a wall in the late afternoon. In color, movement, texture. In the moment you come back to your heart and realize—you’re here.
Mindful Photography: Seeing with New Eyes
One way I’m grounding into Presence and Heart this year is through an online class in mindful photography.
Not the technical side. Not f-stops or settings.
This practice is about seeing.
I used to believe that taking photos meant stepping out of the present moment—interrupting life to capture it. What I’m learning instead is the opposite. When practiced mindfully, photography becomes a way of staying with the moment longer—allowing light, shadow, color, movement, and stillness to meet us.
It’s not about getting the perfect shot. It’s about being so here that the moment becomes vivid.
A Gentle Self-Check: Presence + Heart
If mindfulness is “now mind + heart,” here are a few questions you might sit with this month—no judgment, just curiosity:
- How often am I physically here, but mentally somewhere else?
- When I’m with people I love, am I fully present—or partially distracted?
- What helps me return to the moment most easily?
- Where do I feel my heart closing or bracing during the day?
- What opens my heart, even a little?
- What is one ordinary moment I can treat as sacred this week?
You don’t need perfect answers. Just willingness.
Because every time you notice you’re not present—and return? That’s mindfulness. That’s the practice.
An Invitation to Begin
Goals can be beautiful—especially when they’re rooted in Presence and Heart.
So before you map out the year, what if you paused long enough to feel what’s true?
One breath. One honest check-in. One moment of real attention.
When we start from the inside out, we don’t have to force our way forward. We begin choosing with more clarity and living with more connection.
